Charles Haanel portrait, the master key system

Charles Haanel is, as you probably know from the homepage of my site, the author of The Master Key System. On this page I will show you what else he did. Because the question occurs; why would I care to spend my precious time reading an old and dusty book by a man I have never heard of?

Personal life

Very little has been recorded about Haanel and there is little information about his private life.

Charles Francis Haanel was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on May 22, 1866 and died in St. Louis at the age of 83 on November 27, 1949.

Early in his childhood he moved with his parents Hugo and Emeline (Fox) Haanel and the rest of the family from Ann Arbor to St. Louis.

Charles Married Esther M. Smith at only 19 years of age in 1885. Together they got tree children, one son and two daughters. Esther died at an early age in 1901 leaving Mr. Haanel a widower. Seven years later in 1908 he got married with Margaret Nicholson.

A successful businessman

Charles Haanels first job was as an office boy for the National Enameling & Stamping Company in St. Louis. For fifteen years he worked there filling several different positions over the years.

After these fifteen years he resigned to pursue his ambitions. He wanted to organize a company based on the production of sugar and coffee. He succeeded greatly and his enterprise gave him grate financial values. He was president of this company that was organized in 1898.

Continental Commercial Company was organized in 1905 with Charles Haanel as president. This company was consolidated with the first one and obsorbed six other companies. This became one of the biggest companies of its kind in the world.

Later he organized the Sacramento Valley Improvement Company. There were others involved in this organizing also but Haanel was made president of the company. This company also succeeded greatly and experienced great prosperity. It possessed the largest Tokay vineyards in the world.

Mexico Gold & Silver Mining Company is yet another company where Charles was president. The company was developing the rich mineral resources of the southern republic.

His many degrees

Charles Haanel earned many degrees throughout his life. These were including hon. Ph.D., College National Electronic Institute; Metaphysics, Psy. D., College of Divine Metaphysics; and M.D., Universal College of Dupleix, India.

Mr. Haanel was also affiliated with many groups, including Fellow London College of Psychotherapy; member Authors League of America; American Society of Psychical Research; member of the Society of Rosicrucians; the American Suggestive Therapeutical Association; Science League of America; Pi Gamma Mu Fraternity; Master Mason, Keystone Lodge No. 243, A.F. & A.M.; created a Noble in Moolah Temple.

The Author

Author of The Master Key System is what Charles Haanel is most famous for today. He wrote five books where all of them are about correct thinking, mental training and psychology.

The Master Key System was first published as a mail order course in 1912. It consists of 24 parts where the recipients received one part each week together with questions that was to be answered. It was a major success and Haanel got letters from prominent people who wanted him to stop the course. They feared that they could loose their positions if the average American learned “the secrets” that Haanel taught in the course. Despite this, Charles published The Master Key System as a book in 1917. By 1933 the book had sold more than 200 000 copies all over the world.

His bibliography looks like this:
• The Master Key System 1912 (mail order course)
• The Master Key System 1917 (book format)
• Mental Chemistry 1922
• The New Psychology 1924
• A Book About You 1928
• The Amazing Secrets of the Yogi 1937

Charles is by many regarded as “The Father of Personal Development.”

Haanel received a letter from none other than Napoleon Hill in 1919. Here Hill stated, "My present success and the success which has followed my work as President of the Napoleon Hill Institute is due largely to the principles laid down in The Master-Key System."

In 2007 he was also quoted in the best-selling book “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne. Return from Charles Haanel back to freemasterkey.com
